Have been using xnview for a few years and decided to try xnviewmp. Installation went flawlessly. Upon first opening xnviewmp I was presented with a box containing some choices and running the file associations tool. When I clicked on the "file association tool" windows (am running windows xp sp3) popped up a box wanting to know if I would like to run this app as my admin account or another (runas) account. I clicked on my admin account and nothing happened. I then tried running the file association tool as another account (runas). When I tried another account a window popped up telling me "this service cannot be started, either because it is disabled......". I decided to skip this part and allow xnviewmp to open. I then went to settings and tried to run the file association tool but had the same problem.
The interesting part of this if I open the xnviewmp folder in program files, double click on the file association tool.exe, all works fine. Anyone have any ideas as to why the file association tool won't run from the opened application?
I have many programs installed on my laptop but windows seems to only have a problem with xnviewmp.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Please bear with me if I don't answer any replies right away. I live so far out in the boonies we have to pipe in sunlight. Have to go to my daughter's house to get onlline.

Re: Problem with file association tool xnviewmp
It is rather a problem of WinXP in the way in which it implements the RunAs. I encountered myself also in the days of WinXP with another program. In order to work ok you must start from the beginning the program (or the file association tool) with admin rights. The program correctly(?) asks for rights elevation just that the Windows engine is a little bit flawed there.
Another thing could be an antivirus (or some other form of "intelligent" security) which sees that the main process tries to run another process with elevated rights and consider this as a suspect thing and blocks it.

Thanks m.Th. for your reply.
I don't run an antivirus 'real time' but do have Avira installed. Use Comodo firewall but placed the file association.exe in the trusted files department of Comodo. Checked out the 'properties' of the file association.exe, security tab and found I have total control. Can still use the program ok. Just have to go into the xnviewmp folder for the tool to work. Have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled xnviewmp a few times but same thing happens. Xp does have it's quirks. May have to just live with this one.

Re: Problem with file association tool xnviewmp
Here's another interesting thing that happens. If I open the XnViewMP folder and double click on the file associations tool - somtimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Decided to try an experiment by creating a new folder on the desktop. Moved the file associations tool and the necessary dll.s to this folder. Double clicked on the tool in this new folder and it worked great. Got me baffled!

Re: Problem with file association tool xnviewmp
Yes sir, I took it from the xnviewMP folder in program files. My problem may be do to some kind of link association that windows has with the "File associations tool" button in the program gui. I can open the tool and work with file associations if I open the tool direct;y from the program files folder. Some reason windows sees this "button" in the gui as some kind of threat.
