Sony "raw" format (ARW)

Post by meyergru »

Hi,

I have found that with recent versions of XnView (tested with 2.1.0 and 2.1.3), there is a bug when I display Sony ARW pictures: they are elongated on their right edge by a few pixels, i.e. the rightmost pixel column is repeated to the right for a few pixels (apparently 40).

You have to enable full size preview for raw files in the options in order to see this. Also, the image dimensions are shown as 5496x3656, whereas the correct dimensions are 5456x3632 in any other viewer and also these latter dimensions are shown on the XnView EXIF tab.

Probably, the problem is on the lower edge, too, at least, the sizes differ in both X and Y dimensions.

I have uploaded an example (look at right edge) here: http://ubuntuone.com/3GFUSO1YxxuqU2UUj674W2

Tested with something claiming to be RAW Image Viewer (a simple GUI for dcraw 9.19) I get 5496*3656 for your ARW. XnView 2.20 agrees with these dimensions.

I vaguely recall that some viewers don't know how to handle pixels at the edges, and solve it by throwing away ambiguous info, while dcraw tries to do something smarter. I don't see any problem at the edges at 800% with XnView, and the RAW Image Viewer at its maximal zoom level also shows no problems.

I'm not sure why XnView scales this ARW and an unrelated test-DNG down, I'd wish that it shows the real size as good as possible, even if it takes longer (JFTR, your ARW occupies 22074 KB, it's huge.) I also don't know which dcraw version is used by XnView, 9.19 (2013) would be old, I recently stumbled over a 9.20 somewhere.

Update 2014-09-21: XnView 2.22 displays the full resolution (slower) for raw formats, if you pick "full size" (or similar, I'm looking at a German UI, where that is "volle Größe") in the options for the picture view. There are also "read options" for camera raw, where I have "high resolution" (German "hohe Auflösung"). Presumably you have to tweak some of these "read option" values for your specific camera raw needs. I'm only testing two DNG + ARW samples, everything checked or set to 1.000 in the "read options" works for me.
