Trying to update Database (v0.64 to v0.68) => Error: 1

Post by viking »

I run v0.68 (zip version) on Win7 -64bit. I said "NO" to update the Thumbnails and XnViewMP backed up my database (4.59 GB from v0.64). It then tried to upgrade the database and after working for 15 min, I got the message : XnViewMP - There is a problem to update database (Error: 1), please contact the developer.
p.s. During the upgrade, I saw that XnViewMP was creating the "journaling" files.

Same issue :(

What info is in the XnView.db database...(I have not added any manual info; it only contains the auto scanned data)?
I also wonder why it is so big (4.59 GB) since I don't think that it doesn't contain any thumbnails (I believe that the the thumbnails are in the 5.88 GB file called Thumb.db)?

I am not sure how to send you a 4.59 GB large database. Furthermore, some info in the database may be confidential.

Maybe, I should just delete the database and start from the beginning....?

if you don't use rating, keywords, you can rename it

Maybe an option to disable the database for users who don't use it?

e.g. Tools > Settings... > Browser -- Enable database (For ratings, keywords...)

The database is a star feature for many users but not all users need it enabled...

1. "Auto scanned data" - the "text" part :) - ...IOW the file names, paths, automatic metadata info (EXIF etc.)

2. The manually entered (cataloged) info: Ratings/Stars, Colors, Tag info (which files are tagged), Categories/Keywords etc.

If you delete the xnview.db you must delete also the thumbs.db - if not, in the future you can have wrong thumbs for your files. But a better approach is just to hide/rename them and work with the program for a few days/a week and if everything is ok then your can delete them.

Eh.... ....databases.

The most expensive thing in storage is to get more space. That's why there is NO database engine which shrinks the size of its database files, even if you delete (a lot of) records from them. You must do it manually with concrete SQL commands. In XnView MP there is a simple GUI for that: Go to Tools | Settings | Database, choose Optimize. For the options there and for other things, see the discussion here: http://www.xnview.com/wiki/index.php/Xn ... e_solution

Hmmm.... database helps a lot in program speedup, not only for cataloging. Many users 'use' it without knowing it.

But of course, if one just wanders and looks most of the pictures only once, then perhaps DB is an overkill. Also, then the thumbs perhaps are an overkill.

That is a good reason for gaining more insight into what it is used for...

I basically only use the Editor, and I'm not sure if I really need the browser at all although it may be useful sometimes, but I don't want the program to run slowly while it creates a large database and thumbnail cache for all the images on my hard drive...

Hello,
... A good practice (for me), after checking than all keywords, ratings/stars, colors, etc are correctly filed into the xnview data base (work as a cache) is to transfert them into the embedded metadatas of the images (jpg) files, as IPTC and /or XMP metadata.
By this way, even if the xnview DBs are corrupted (or a old safe copy version of the DB), it easy and "not user time consuming" to restore them (from the images.jpg to the DBs) in case of problem or new XnViewMP data base version.

I think than a "batch Convert" tool has to be developed for this use. (my request)
FI: into Batch convert, a tool to add IPTC/XMP keywords already exist but doen't meet exactly the need.

http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... 03#p119691

---------------
Edit: For this see now here (separate topic):
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... 36#p119836

An other question: What does exactly do, into "View" menu:
Updale database from files
and
Update files From database

... Is it only for selected files?, only the related folder, or for all the files already into db?, takes care of the settings into the ini file, or not ?, rebuild thumbnails or not ? synchronize IPTC/XMP keywords, categories, or not ?, etc..???

... Because I'm a little afraid to use "these massive tools" (without knowing what I am exactly doing, and without a good notice) ???

FI: For me "massive tools" should only be available into "batch convert" processus ("Batch" basically mean for me "massive" ... so it is enough explicit)
