Question to tab EXIF in info pane - and file exif_xx.lng

Post by herb »

Hello,

File exif_xx.lng is for translation purposes and it contains translated strings for some EXIF tags including also MakerNote tags of some manufacturers.
For Olympus MakerNotes it contains 7 tags and for Panasonic MakerNotes it contains no tags.

During tests (with German GUI of XnViewMP 0.68 ) I have seen the following:
- For an image file which contains 24 Olympus MakerNote tags (displayed by Exiftool) only 7 MakerNote tags are displayed within the EXIF tab.
They are displayed in English when file exif_de.lng is removed and they are displayed in German otherwise.
- For an image file which contains 84 Panasonic MakerNote tags (displayd by Exiftool) only 34 MakerNote tags are displayed within the EXIF tab.
They are always displayed in English.

Now i have some questions:
(1) the result above tells me that the selection of tags is hard-coded inside XnViewMP, or is it file driven?
(2) what is to be done that also the Panasonic Makernotes (and maybe also other MakerNotes) are displayed in German within the EXIF tab?
(3) what is to be done that more than only 7 Olympus MakerNotes tags are displayed within the EXIF tab?

In case of e.g. Olympus MakerNotes (in my case) within the EXIF tab
- the 7 tags are only displayed for *.jpg images
- but none for *.orf images (although Exiftool displays > 100 tags)

So I ask in general:
(4) Which selections are done by XnViewMP internally?

I hope someone will explain the current state.
Thanks in advance and best regards

The fields are hardcoded, so i need to check the encoded format for each field, and add the support :)
exif_xx.lng are only for translation

Hello Pierre,

thanks for your quick and detailed reply.
When I understand you correct, your goal is to support all MakerNote tags from all manufacturers.
For me this is not only a translation item.

Please be aware that XnViewMP 0.68 does also not support e.g. all Canon or Nikon MakerNote tags.
I have images taken with a G11 with Canon MakerNote tags, where Exiftool displays >90 tags and XnViewMP only 31.
Also in case of Nikon E8700 images XnViewMP displays only 15 MakerNote tags and Exiftool displays 29.
And I am sure this will also happen for MakerNote tags of other manufacturers.

Working with Exiftool for a longer time I have seen that
- (very often) with each new camera model new MakerNote tags are introduced by the manufacturers,
- with each model new values (for existing MakerNote tags) will be introduced and
- also some values of (now supported) tags depend on the model name too (e.g. Olympus MakerNote tag "Quality").

So please do not misunderstand and allow the following proposal:
For me it would be sufficient that only Exiftool displays the MakerNote tags?
(Phil Harvey has done an excellant job with Exiftool and why should (in case of MakerNote tags) it be done again?
Maybe XnViewMP concentrates on some MAIN-MakerNote tags that are common for all cameras.
(But please do not ask: which tag belongs to it).

Best regards
Herb
