"Build IPTC from XMP" - missing or bug?

Post by slarti76 »

Hello!

This is my first post here, so sorry if I'm asking something "well known" - but I searched the forum for a while and didn't find anything.

My question is what happened to the "Build IPTC from XMP" in XnViewMP? I don't find any mention of it here, e.g. in the "Missing features" thread.

I realize that MP obviously is meant to integrate IPTC and XMP into one dialog - in that case, I wonder if it is a bug that my XMP tagsdon't appear in the dialog. When starting to work with new images that I already tagged on my smartphone (with F-Stop which writes XMP), I first have to start old XnView and import the XMP subjects with "Build IPTC from XMP". That way, they end up as keywords in the XnViewMP dialog, as intended. If I open XnViewMP directly and then the IPTC/XMP dialog, the keywords are empty, even though the XMP info tab correctly shows the tags. I can't be a matter of different tag names, as XnViewMP writes its keywords with the exact same tag name (dc/subject).

So is this a bug or still missing feature?

Thank you very much!

Yes, according to what XnView displays, there is only an XMP block when I first open the picture in XnViewMP. Once I use the "Edit IPTC/XMP" dialog (and enter and save something), both metadata are written and seem to be equivalent.
The app I'm using on my Android phone, F-Spot, only writes XMP. It can also write XMP sidecars, didn't try that yet, though.

There you are.
The screenshot visualizes the problem: Although the XMP data clearly contains the subjects, the IPTC/XMP dialog doesn't contain any keywords. I did some research, and realize that subjects and keywords are not exactly the same - but XnViewMP writes "subject" in the XMP files, too.

in options, use 'XMP update or create IPTC"
Following the choosen mode, XMP or IPTC will be readed

Thank you very much, that did it! Didn't see that option - well saw it, but didn't realize it's the solution.
