MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
Hoi there,
In my XNViewMP i found that the Bulk converter restarts itself over and over again, every 3 seconds after finishing.
With ie a rename action i so get all files like File1-new, File1-new new, File1 new new new, etc etc.
Is this any setting anywhere? I reinstalled MP but that didnt help. I then tested XNConverter and found the same problem.
Then i tested XNView traditional and dont have this problem. But there one can not have its own rename string (as far as i found out, it auto-renames to _1).
This concerns a Win8.1 system.
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Wilfried

Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
Autorestart means that the converter repeats the same run without my command.
Within the same window and without touching anything after the first normal run it just re-runs the same actions again after about 3 seconds. And again. And again. And again.
If i dont stop it mannually, with a batch of ie 100 files i will have ie 5 x 100 files after 5 minutes. If a rename action is included the files then have names like File1-new, File2-new etc and after the second auto-run like File1-new-new, File2-new new, etc. More clear i cannot explain this.
I just installed XNview standard-way and dont know about Hotfolder. I cannot find the term Hotfolder in the programm, not in the bulk-converter window and not in the user guide wikki. So i dont know if i have or use it.

Hot folder is an option in the XnViewMP Tools > Batch convert... 'Input' tab :Wilfried5719 wrote:I just installed XNview standard-way and dont know about Hotfolder. With that option outputting converted files to the 'Source' folder will cause the type of infinite loop you describe...
If you're not using the Hot folder function, it is hard to explain the effect you are seeing: could you please post more details of the setting you are using and if possible a screenshot.

Well... Your input images are not in a nominated hot folder, so that at least is established.
And I can't see anything in your settings which could account for the effect you are seeing, or think of any possible explanation for the effect considering that the Batch convert function has operated as expected in the past...
It is as if your input folder is somehow being regarded as a hot folder although not nominated as such...
Possibly a bug resulting from the recently introduced Hot folder function?? Or a Win8.1 issue??

Oke, thanks for the check.
I will use the traditional version then.
Is it correct that i there cannot self determine the rename extension? As far as i can see and test that version auto-renames to _1.

Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
Where is "Convert" ?!
Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
'Convert' on the XnViewMP Batch convert menu I think, Pierre is interested in the 'auto-restart' issue...Wilfried5719 wrote:Where is "Convert" ?!
Could you also please confirm that you have never in the past selected -- perhaps in error -- a Hot folder?
Could you also please try creating a new folder and placing a few images in it, and see if Batch convert runs correctly for that foloder.

Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
I installed XNViewMP that on any moment went into auto-restarting in batchmode. Then i also installed Convert which shows the same behaviour and Classic that wont run in batch (for me, see my remarks above). Maybe i did hit the Hotfolder button some moment, i dont know after so many clicks and tests.
Then i uninstalled and cleaned up everything with Revo in expert mode. And ran CCCleaner that didnt find any problem left. I re-installed MP, Convert end Classic again but found the same problems. Within this second installations i am sure not to have hit the hotfolder button.
But then: please explain what any hot folder clicking has anything at all to do with any auto-restart isue??? Why is that hotfolder button in the batch prog if you think it has this bad result? If you think about hotfolder coursing this it should to my opinion be possible to analyse the code and conclude yes or no about problems or updates. And even then i dont understand how this can happen on a completely fresh installation after a maximum uninstall with Revo and CCCleaner. All of the above concerns my laptop-Win8.1.
Unfortunately i have more bad news. Today I freshly installed XNViewMP at my Win7 netbook. So on my netbook-Win7 and the following concerns Win7 (and not just Win8.1 on my laptop). I there ran into about the same problems.
This is what i did in Win7 on another system and with (ofcourse) another set of files:
1-Installed XNViewMP completely default, accepting all settings.
2-Bulk run 1 oke. No auto-restart. Folder with 14 files.
3-Bulk run 2 oke. No auto-restart. FileA-new becomes FileA-new-new.
4-Clicked on Hotfolder but cancel. Bulk run 3 oke. No auto-restart.
5-Clicked on Hotfolder and added folder (the same). Started bulk-run but XNViewMP crashed (non-reacting) at the Do-you-want-to-overwrite-window. Stopped via C-A-D and restarted prog. Bulk run 4 with auto-restart.
6-Bulk run 4 starts with last file (always last, why?). It re-runs the actions on only this last file about 14 times. And then stops without re-running the other files.
7-For your info: In my Win81 laptop it re-runs the actions over and over again on all files in the folder.
8- I uninstalled the Win7 version with Revo-max. CCCleaner did not find problems left. Shut down the system (fully), restarted and re-installed XNViewMP.
9 -As 2. So in Win7 the problem is gone after re-install.
10 - As 3 and 9.
11- As 4.
12- Clicked on Hotfolder and added folder (the same). XNViewMP crashes (non-reacting) at the Do-you-want-to-overwrite-window. Stop via C-A-D and restart prog.
13- As 12. Crash.
14- As 12. Crash.
15- As 8 and 9.
My conclusions:
A- The Hotfolder-auto-restart problem in bulk mode is there in Win7 and Win81.
B- Causing a crash problem in Win7. Can be solved via re-install.
C- Causing an endless auto-restart problem in Win81. Cannot be solved by user.
D- Ps: (how) does Hotfolder work? I can add a folder in that window and Hf remembers it. But i cannot add that folder via that window. There is no "select folder" button and it doesnt react at clicking once or double. So in my Win7 and Win81 my favorite folders are in Hf but without use?!
E: Please streamline all the Bulk versions and windows and appaerences inbetween and within Classic, MP and Convert. They look and function and behave all different which makes it inconvenient.
F: I wont run any XNView on my Win7 notebook since it is a hotel- and holiday system with a to small screen for photo editing. So i am stuck with my Win81 laptop problem.
Thanks and regards
Wilfried

Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
Thanks for your detailed tests which Pierre can study when he has time...
Hot folders: the concept of a hot folder is that images that are placed in the nominated folder -- possibly automatically from webcam software for example -- will be converted immediately when they arrive. However, if the specified 'Output' folder is the 'Source' folder, converted files are [at least as the function is currently coded... ] seen as new files to be converted, which will start an infinite loop. So when the hot folder function is configured that is not a useful setting...
You might try running Batch convert with the 'Output' folder set to a different folder to the 'Input' folder and see if the problem still occurs, that might just possibly provide a work-around...
You might note with respect to uninstalling XnViewMP and XnConvert that the configuration settings may, depending on the Settings > Integration -- Paths settings, be written (or not... ) to locations that can only be accessed with Admin rights, although the software you are using will likely fully clean any previous installation.
Possibly Pierre can see something significant in the detailed results you have posted...

Looking at your detailed tests, 5- above looks significant... The 'Do-you-want-to-overwrite' setting is configurable on the 'Output' tab under 'When output files already exist' if you want to explore that further yourself.Wilfried5719 wrote:This is what i did in Win7 on another system and with (ofcourse) another set of files:

Hot folder can't be used when source pathname = destination pathname else new files will be converted...
Pierre.
Re: MP Bulk converter auto-restarts over and over again
Wilfried5719 says that he has never set up a Hot folder path, and the same issue has recurred after uninstalling and reinstalling XnViewMP...xnview wrote:Hot folder can't be used when source pathname = destination pathname else new files will be converted...
The Hot folder function would produce exactly the result he is seeing, and I have suggested that he try outputting the converted files to a different folder to the source folder, as a test that might give some insight into the issue, and also possibly provide a work-around...
