I've recently given XnViewMP a try again, still using XnView eventhough the DB is horribly slow, and wanted to give some feedback for 0.72.
One of the things that was really nicer about XnView was that there wasn't drag and drop for the category list in the browser view, the one with the checkboxes.
While drag and drop is nice for rearranging them, which is something I think shouldn't be needed that often, does it prevent toggling the checkbox with some momentum, which is something that happens constantly for me.
What I mean specifically is that I always move very quickly to the categories I want to check and click while still moving the cursor slightly, causing a mini "drag" of maybe 1-2px. XnView is totally fine with that, also the checkbox click area is 2px larger in radius than then checkbox is visually which is also a nice thing, but well, XnViewMP constantly starts drag and drop because of this.
The drag and drop is also rather buggy as it seems: I got a fair amount of categories and at one point I tried to toggle one at the bottom end and instead dragged it, according to XnViewMP atleast, and while I did only move it a few pixel, did I end up having a category from 15 lines higher sub-categried into the one I accidentally dragged, so a category I didn't even drag or have even near my cursor got moved.
On top of this did I have categories in the list vanish, gladly only visually and a restart brought them back, or just appear multiple times after drags, mostly after accidental ones like the one above.
It also doesn't re-sort them when you add new ones, they get sorted according to their creation name, aka "New Category" and that's it, if you want to get them sorted in after changing their name you have to restart the program.
My proposal for the drag and drop issue would be to offer a setting to simply disable it as I'm sure there might be many who actually like it and are fine with it but I don't like it, I had to slow down my usage of it to prevent drag and drop breaking things and not accidentally trigger it and compared to XnView did that just feel sluggish and I don't think that slowing down work processes in a program should be a goal.
I'm also still missing being able to place multiple images next to each other like in the XnView viewer and no, "comparing" images is no replacement, it doesn't allow individual zoom nor changing the width of the shown images.
XnViewMP is overall very nice, especially the faster DB compared to XnView but the usability of the UI is sadly not that good yet but I hope it will continue to shape up and get refined.
