If I click on "Browser menu > View > Show files in subfolders", then try to rename a file (without separate dialog window"), I get the following error message: "Error renaming the file [filename]".
If I check the option "Use dialog to rename file" in "Options > Browser > Browser", renaming works.
Tested with XnView v2.33 (2015-06-18) on Windows 7 64 bit SP1.
