can't change file associations within xnview 2.33

I can't check and uncheck boxes in Tools > Options > Associations. And all buttons are greyed out except for the "Windows File Associations" button. See attached screenshot. Image

I can associate extensions using the Windows File Associations button, but not all of the extensions are included in the Windows "Set Program Associations" dialog.

I am running Windows 8.1.

Is this normal or has something gone wrong? If so, how can I fix it so I can associate extensions in Xnview?

With Win 7/8/10 you need to use 'windows file associations'
