cannot load sff (Structured Fax Format) files

Post by KunterBunter »

I'd like to view sff-files with XnViewMP Version 0.76.1 x64 (Oct 26 2015) on an iMac Retina 5k, OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.3.
Under Formats it is stated Structured Fax Format Extension sff Read is supported. However, I get "File can't be loaded!" when I doubleclick on it. What gives?

Do you have Tools > Settings... > General | General tab -- Show all graphics formats enabled?

You could check that first: I'm not sure why that setting is provided, possibly as XnView software can open so many file types it speeds up opening common formats when unchecked?

Thank you for your answer. On my Mac I found this under Preferences ... > General| General tab -- Show all graphics formats and it is already enabled. Any other ideas?

In the absence of any other posts, I suspect your problem viewing SFF files on a Mac is due to a missing plug-in: a SFF plug-in Xssf.dll is included in the XnView Classic Extended download, or can be downloaded directly from this link. However, XnView Classic is 32-bit Windows software, and I'm not sure whether that plug-in would run on a 64-bit version of XnView MP on a Windows system, let alone on a Mac...

If you have Crossover software on you Mac, you could possibly use XnView Classic with the above plug-in installed to view your SFF files.

Do you have an example SFF file you could upload, 2MiB maximum in a ZIP or RAR archive, or post online?

I tried XnView Classic in Windows and the sff files can be viewed. However, with a 64-bit version of XnViewMP on a Windows system, I have the same problem that the files cannot be opened. I have added an example file for testing.
Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for your prompt response.
I installed the 32bit version of XnViewMP in Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, and it behaves the same as the 64bit version. Therefore, it seems there is no sff support at all in XnViewMP yet. :(

If you copy the Xssf.dll plug-in from XnView Classic into the XnView MP 32-bit 'plugins' folder the SFF test file you uploaded should open, unless there is a specific issue with Windows 10...

Tested XnView MP 0.76.1 32-bit on Windows 7 SP1.

The XnView Classic 32-bit plug-ins should work for XnView MP 32-bit and XnConvert 32-bit Windows versions AFAIK. :D

You are right, this way the old sff plugin still works in a 32 bit environment. Thank you very much! :D
