Cut out text area and replace background color

Post by Hans L »

Hello:

I have a hardcopy card with a light purple background on which is black text. I have scanned the card and cut out the text area, which makes the area black. Can Xnview be used to replace the black area with the surrounding light purple color, or do you need a more advanced program for that (Xnview, is after all, a viewer)?

Thanks,

Could you please post the original scan and your cropped image so as to be clear about the problem?

Not too clear what the rationale for what you're doing is but that doesn't matter: if you make a small selection on part of the image you wish to copy and copy that to the clipboard with Ctrl-C, you can paste that colour into any area(s) on the image you wish to change, as in the attachment below.

But in this case the background colour isn't uniform, you could if you wish copy a uniform colour area from another image to the clipboard and use that...

I don't know if that is any help?

Okay, I deleted text in the black area, and I want to replace it with other text, but on the same background as before. I did not believe that one could cut just the text, so I cut the area that the text covered, and I then wanted to recover the background color (and pattern, if possible, but in the printed version of this card, one cannot discern the pattern). Then, I intended to put the new text on top of the recovered-color area.

I now have the card with an acceptable background (thank you!). The trick is now how to insert text where I want it (centered vert. and horiz.) and with fond and font sizes of my choice. Looks to be rather difficult.

That shouldn't be too difficult if you experiment with Image > Add Text... but you will probably need some trial and error to get the result you want, and depending on the overall pixel dimensions of the image, may possibly need to to set a large font point size to see the text.

The attachment is 24 point black Calibri..

Two further thoughts to follow XnTriq's post above:

Presumably you made a selection and then pressed the delete key: if you the change the background colour set in Edit > Background colour... you can make the deleted area any uniform colour you wish, if that could be helpful...

Please note that the Solidify filters won't work with XnView. You'll need a dedicated editor like PhotoFiltre (free, portable, small footprint) with support for layers.

I spoke too soon :-|
Solidify A/B/C don't run on PhotoFiltre. Unfortunately, some of the Flaming Pear's plug-ins are known to be picky when it comes to the host application.

On an image with large pixel dimensions a normal wordprocessing point size may produce very small text, even to the extent that the text inserted may be missed causing confusion.

Here's the full image with 144 point text in place of 24 point in the annotated preview image posted above:
