NEW with questions ???

Post by BuckSkin »

I just downloaded and installed XnView.

I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

When I downloaded, I downloaded from the official XnView site download page and opted for the version that had the picture of a truck and said "extended"; I could not find it mentioned anywhere on the page; is this the 64-bit version ?

Also, I checked the box to also install XnShell; however, even after a restart, I can see no evidence of anything different in Explorer; what did I not do or do wrong ?

Thanks for the nice program and making it available.

If you go to this page you can see all the XnView software versions available.

I've never seen a picture of a truck but the "extended" version is a version of XnView Classic, the original version which is 32-bit only and lacks Unicode support; XnView MP is the latest version and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Note that plug-ins for many of the less common file formats supported by XnView software are only available for the 32-bit version, as is TWAIN scanning interface support, but you can install both versions if you wish.

On Windows 64-bit you will need to install the 64-bit version of the shell, which adds entries to the right-click context menu.

I downloaded from this page:

http://www.xnview.com/en/xnview/

If you scroll down about midway, you should see three options; one a picture of a shopping cart, one a picture of a car, and the one I got --- "extended" with the picture of a truck.

So, did I end up with 32-bit ? It says Version 2.36.

Thanks so much.

That link is to the XnView Classic versions which are only available in 32-bit so, yes, you have 32-bit software; I'll take your word about the truck!

Depending on what you plan to do, I would suggest downloading both XnView Classic and XnView MP, which now has a nearly-complete feature set, although some browser functions are still evolving.

Note that if you wish to open PDF files you will also need to install Ghostscript, x32 for XnView Classic and x64 for XnView MP 64-bit.

Sorry for disappearing from the conversation for a bit; DISH satellite suddenly went down AGAIN....GRRRR..........

Anyways, many thanks to you, I now have everything up and running.

It needs to be made a bit clearer in the descriptions for dumbies like me; I first downloaded the zip-files; it turns out the application in the zip-file is a temporary, I guess maybe portable, application that does not really install and does not show up in "programs"

I then downloaded the "set up" and both programs installed with wizards and now show up in "programs"

The first download, the Classic 32-bit one, is currently an icon on my task-bar that when clicked runs the program without it being installed.

I plan to wade into this, head and ears, and get it figured out; be ready for lots of questions --- I seem to collect them.

Thanks so much as I would never have figured this out without your help.
