Cannot copy mp4 because it is in use

Post by Brother Gabriel-Marie »

Say there is an mp4 file in the browser. If I try to shift+drag and drop to move that file into Windows Explorer, Windows tells me the file is in use. This is logical because the mp4 gets loaded into the preview window and is playing in the preview pane (even if the tab is not selected).

However, even though this is logical, it is not a good user experience. It means I can't move the mp4 file.

Pierre,

Well, in my test it seems to work when I move the playing mp4 file from the browser into a directory in the Folders panel.

However, if I try to move (shift+drag-drop) the playing mp4 file (I can see it playing in the Preview panel) from one instance of MP to another one, I get a "Copy Warning" dialogue saying, "Cannot remove source." And whilst this dialogue is open, the video stops playing (and keeps its time position) in the Preview panel as the dialogue waits for me to choose between "Retry, Skip, Skip All, Cancel".

So I choose "Retry" (the video in the preview panel is still not progressing) - and, strange to say, I get a second dialogue for "Replace... With" where it wants me to rename the file as if it existed in the destination directory before I started the move operation. At this point, MP has not shown me any new files in the directory, but if I go and look in Explorer, I can see that MP has, indeed, copied that mp4 file - which explains the second rename/replace dialogue.

If I choose "Cancel" in the first "Copy Warning" dialogue, it copies the file anyway. However, I am *moving* the file (shift+drag-drop = MOVE), not copying it. This might be part of the problem.

Also, just for the record, I *can* delete an mp4 file in MP whilst it is playing.
