View Switching and Tabs

Post by Brother Gabriel-Marie »

Okay, I don't like to use tabs in XnView. I want to double-click to switch between the browser and image views. I don't like to have multiple tabs open for individual files.
I just want one tab per Browser, and when I open an image it uses the same tab.

However, I can't get the settings right for this.
When I double-click on an image in the browser, it always opens a View tab.
What I expect is that the View replaces the current tab - so when I double-click on an image in the browser, the browser tab is replaced by the view.
What I really want is no tabs at all. In Classic there was an option to hide all tabs, but in MP there is only the option (in View menu) to show tabs on top or bottom.

I have these settings:
Settings > Interface > Interface > Multiple view for same file = UNCHECKED
Settings > Interface > Interface > Single view for multi-opened files = CHECKED
Settings > Interface > Tabs > Maximum of view tabs = 1 ---->(this should actually read: "Maximum number of tabs") - but I want to set this to 0 because I don't want an extra view tab to open - I want the browser tab to be replaced by view. Then when I double-click on the view, it switches back to the browser with that image selected.

However, if we have tabs, then I WOULD like to have multiple tabs this way:
I would like to have three or four browser tabs open, and each one would be able to switch to image view for an individual image file.
That way I could switch between directories of images in the same window (like in FreeCommander). Right now I have to use multiple instances of XnView.

Karl02's suggestions for simplified tab handling should be right up your alley, Br. Gabriel-Marie.

  1. Tools » Settings... » Interface » Tabs » Maximum of view tabs: [ 1 ]
  2. Tools » Settings... » Interface » ToolBar » Browse mode: Add button for cmd_tabsShow

Sorry, I am wrong here. In the view menu, the item is "show" or "bottom" with checkboxes.

AND - if you uncheck "show" then the tabbar disappears (like I wanted).
But I suspect there is still a tab open; I just don't see it anymore...
Sorry about the confusion on that point.

I missed that, too.
So cmd_tabsShow = View » Tab » Show.

You're right: Even if Maximum of view tabs is set to 1, you'll end up with a total of 4 (1 × browser + 3 × viewer) tabs, when you select 3 thumbnails in the browser and Open all selected from the context menu.
