Keeping default icons when associating file types

Hi, i couldn't find any option or i am just missing it, so i ask if someone could direct me to it.

When i associate a file type (for example .gif or .ani) it changes to one of xnviews icons? How do i keep the default, which for cases like .ani, shows the image and therefore is easier to identify.

Currently there's no easy way to change the icon. Do you know the Windows registry?
