Initial scan of directories

Hi everybody!

Sorry, if maybe this question came up already. Maybe I used the wrong search words, but I couldn't find an appropriate answer to my question:

I newly installed XnView MP as a substitute for Picasa. I already had assosiated a lot of keywords within the corresponding IPTC field with hundreds of photos. But now, after installation of XnView MP I only can see in the categories list (and also search only these) the nunber of tags of those pictures I have browsed already.

I would have expected an initial scan that reads and collects all that information to provide it completely in the selection/filter lists, as well as including new or updated pictures processed or added to the system by different applications. (Picasa had that feature and hence was always up to date; unfortunately you cannot say that about the program anymore).

Now, is there a feature like I request, and I just can't find it? Or is XnView still lacking that and I really have to browse first every directory and subfolders manually?

you can add folder+subfolder in the cache by using settings>Catalog>Add folder

Thank you very much! That finally solved my problem and I could manage to create the catalog for my complete collection. The dialog is a bit buggy though and the feature well hidden, though I think it should be one of the first automatic features after installation.

so you think that first time a dialog must ask to import photo library?

Well, tastes might be different, but I found the program was somehow "naked" right after installation. Due to the fact that categories play quite an important roll in administrating photos, and I have to with about 130,000 pictures, I felt a bit lost with only the few keywords collected from the folders I browsed. Then, I don't know for how long I would have searched for the feature to manually create a catalog. Hence, I had to ask!

So yes, I would prefer to be asked after the installation for the option of immediately creating a catalog. And for refresh or maybe even creating further catalogs I would first look in "FIle -> Catalog -> New" or "FIle -> Catalog -> Refresh" or something like that, to keep up with the menue standards of most operating systems.
