Categories inside Dropbox folder

Post by rapha.jolly »

Hello,

First I wanted to thank you for providing such a good tool for classifying files.

I started tagging my files adding categories to them burning the info as xmp/iptc data inside the files. It worked perfectly, as long as a moved (copy/paste with windows explorer) my files from one folder to another inside my local computer. However I am using Dropbox to share the content with my team.

For some reason, when I copy the files to the dropbox folder, Xnview no longer reads the categories. The xmp/iptc data is still there, I can see it in the 'information' window. But there is no 'translation' to categories.

For information : my catalog.db file is inside the dropbox folder, I thought it would help but nothing happened when I moved it there.

I join to that thread a screenshot of my file when in local computer and another one when in the dropbox folder. I think it has something to do with dropbox getting or not access to the catalog.db file but I can't figure out what's really going on.

Thanks for the help !

By the way, it works fine the other way around : if I assign my categories to files first in the dropbox folder, then when I move them in another folder of my computer, the categories are read by Xnview, as well as the xmp/iptc data. From now on, I will do it in this order but there are hundreds of pictures I already processed and I would really like not to have to redo it all...

strange, and if you make a copy of the file on dropbox folder, XnViewMP doesn't read metadata?

The problem also occurred when I edited (for the first time) a file that was inside dropbox folder and then moved it to another dropbox folder, categories were not read by xmp even though the metadata itself was up to date.
The problem also seemed to come from me using the windows explorer to move my files (not only dropbox) , so I decided to do it within the Xnview app, and magically no problem occurred with categories nor xmp/iptc, everything flowed perfectly.

So in conclusion it's safer for me to do all my operations within Xnview, which btw doesn't bother me at all. Strange though this thing wih dropbox, this being only one folder more inside the computer... there must be something interfering with the synchronising protocols or something like that...

Even with a 'update catalog from files'?
