I want to eliminate 0 byte files from the databases without losing data of existing files.
I did some reorganisation from time to time in Windows explorer. Therfor the database i no longer consistant with the current existing file.
Now what I would like to do is to remove all 0 byte files, thumbnails from them and the assignemt of categories to them and also ratings of 0 byte files.
I do not want to lose thumbs of existing files, categories (even if empty), empty folders, category assignements of existing files and ratings of existing files. Also some files might be tagged.
I see there is a setting "Update catalog from files" also there is one "Update files from catalog". But it is not clear what this does.
How to do this?

In settings -> catalog there is an "optimize..." button.
I think "remove data for orphan files" does most of what you are asking, although I don't know the full detail.
The "update files from catalog" and vice-versa is used when files still exist, but the content gets unsynchronised between DB and image file metadata.
This is sometimes needed if you are matching captions/categories/ratings etc between DB and IPTC/XMP metadata, but you use some other program to edit that metadata in the file. It can also occasionally happen that XnviewMP does not synchronise them properly.
