Sort images by folder settings

Post by sasko1 »

Hello!

I am interested if there is option in XnViewMP to sort images by folder settings? For example, I have most folders sorted by date taken, which is OK and also XnViewMP works OK with this. But I have couple of folders, where I put random images, which are postprocessed randomly, for uploading purposes. That folder has images sorted by last edited. Which is not always last taken, since sometimes I postprocess images from the past.
I searched if XnView has something to take folder settings into account and sort it by it's setting. (for example, windows viewer had this, I think). Hope you understand, what I mean.

Thanks for assistance.

Hello:

Xnviewmp browser sorts photos independent of the ms windows sort.
You can sort in thumb view by use of the up/down green arrows icon on the top mini toolbar or use view pulldown.
Also you can switch the browser view to (Details) mode, witch will gill you sorting columns to sort by. like ms windows details sort

Yeah, I am familiar with up/down green arrows. But was curious if anything in this direction (by folder settings) would be even possible.
Hmm, does XnView remembers the sorting for each directory or just uses the last used sorting for all next folders I am going to look in?

Hello:

Pretty sure the sort is global for all folders. Unless you use a custom sort, witch in theory might kind of do what you want.
You would need to sort - Custom, then manual move 1 picture to force xnviewmp to create a .sort file. But then you would need to change your sort back to custom every time you entered back to the folder.

Also I'm not sure what triggers the delete for the .sort file inside the folder. --The dev should know

I see. Too complicated to do it all the time, I guess. I'll just leave it sort by date taken. It works for most of my needs. Thanks for help.

Sorting on anything else than „Custom” chosen in that folder.

Last folder. But it can be done if in .sort file Pierre inserts some wildcard - for example „*” (asterisk) in order to mark that the content of the sort file is not a list of file names but a way of sorting. In this case a new option should added to the sort menu called „Default sorting” which will explicitly erase the .sort file.

...However in your case, what stops you to keep the sort as „Modified Date” always? If the file is not processed then Date Taken = Modified Date . If it is processed then Modified Date takes precedence. I use it all the time...
