Batch rename with rearranging the pictures

Post by jens116 »

If I make a batch rename and rearrange the pictures with the ^-button and the v-button XnView renames the pictures in fact but in the original sequence not in the rearranged sequence. What wrong do I make?

I think I understand.
The large black arrows are used to move files up and down on list, not to sort them.
You can sort files again by reselecting 'Sort By: name' in Batch rename dialogue. It initially displays files in the order given from browser.

jens116 expects that "up" and "down" buttons in Batch rename work the same as "up" and "down" buttons in Options > Browser > Thumbnail Label - since they look the same. Current behavior is unusual.

But what function do the black up and down arrow buttons in the batch rename menu have if not to sort the pictures in a different sequence?

You are right. There is a bug. The black arrows should allow fine tuning of the list order. They do not work at all.

They do move file in list, but the files are not renamed according the order given by the black arrows.

Pierre, again,
jens116 expects that "up" and "down" buttons in Batch rename work the same as "up" and "down" buttons in Options > Browser > Thumbnail Label - since they look the same. Current behavior is unusual.
Users (not just jens116) may expect that those buttons are assigned to move file in list (reasons above).

I suggest:

- assign option "move file in list" to current buttons
- add new buttons (maybe < and >) and assign current behavior to them

They do that properly. Try it out. The only problem is that actual renaming is not correctly done- changes made by those arrows are ignored. That was the source of the confusion.

Sorry but i don't see any bug. When i move up/down a file from the list, new name is updated.

To see the bug, it is important to look at the picture content when renaming is done. Compare before and after.

Original order of files to be renamed:
a.jpg
b.jpg
c.jpg

With black arrows, the file list looks correct (a change of order made):
a.jpg > 1.jpg
c.jpg > 2.jpg *
b.jpg > 3.jpg

But after renaming, image content says this was done:
a.jpg > 1.jpg
b.jpg > 2.jpg *
c.jpg > 3.jpg
(The original order was actually used)
