XnView MP import and sort: some questions
Hi There,
first, I've to Thank you all for your huge work about this really useful software.
I'm new here, this is my first post and I took a look around here before posting my questions.
My xnview MP is Version 0.84 x64 (Jan 12 2017), on win 7, 64 bit.
In IMPORT & SORT I found almost all I had in my canon software, and this is really satisfing. But here I can go cross different OS, and sources.
Just few questions about that.
1) In Filename I'd like to set something like yyyyMMdd_progressivenumber.ext without hour minutes and seconds. Is it possible ?
2) Keyword to assign at import(XMP), is not clear to me. How to use it ? Is that a way to personalize filename of imported file ? Is out there a tutorial about ?
3) When I click on "?" nothing happens even if I go on elements in window: no tips.
Hope my questions will be useful to others, and not so OT.
Thanks a lot

Re: Xnview MP import and sort: some questions
Hi andalo,
Welcome among us!
Some answers:
1. Currently, no. However it is easy for Pierre (the main developer) to add it. I would suggest to open a new topic in few days with exactly this name in „Suggestions” forum if this topic isn't picked up by him. In fact, WRT to renaming, I would like to put the same mask engine from Batch Rename / Batch Convert because many users have different naming conventions.
2. It is(are) the keyword(s) / category(ies) / tag(s) which are assigned by default to all imported files. Be careful how you type! It is not about filenames but about finding your photos based on different categories stored in XnView's catalog and (optionally) in the file(s) themselves.
3. Forget it.

Re: Xnview MP import and sort: some questions
Hi m.Th.,
thank you for fast answering and welcome
1) ok I'll wait some days, then post it in "suggestions". hour minutes and seconds are too much for my filename. yyyyMMdd_sequentialnumber.ext is fine for me, eheheh.
2)you mean something like inserting particular tags inside files imported ? Like exif in a photo by cameras ? That would be useful to find later (like an Office Access Mask) what you like among your photo folders, in easier way ? Isn't it ? Where could I learn about that ?
3) ..suppose not developed yet, uh ?
Thanks bye bye

2.) Yes. However EXIF data is technical (IOW Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO etc.) while tags are content related. See for more here: http://www.xnview.com/wiki/index.php/Ca ... _XnView_MPandalo wrote:Hi m.Th.,

3.) Yes. ...and I don't think that it would be ever. Our forum works pretty well - much better than the tooltips.

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
Hi,
1) going to post in suggestions next days, as mentioned above, I was also thinking about something like XNCONVERT, where you can personalize FILENAME (like adding "#") while saving it in your favorite format_name.
2) thank you for link:' I'll take a look.
3) Got it, moreover you are right about this forum.
Thank you again.

1. Sure. That is the real solution which will please everyone. Sincerely, I am a little puzzled why Pierre didn't included it from the beginning.andalo wrote:Hi,

+1 The "Import & Sort" dialog should have about the same options as the rename dialog.m.Th. wrote:... 1. Sure. That is the real solution which will please everyone. Sincerely, I am a little puzzled why Pierre didn't included it from the beginning.

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
Hi helmut,
hope not being wrong, but it seems to me Xnconvert has something more, I mean somethig useful among name_file options.
But... we are here right to improve them by our suggestions, isn't it ?
Bye & thanks

Nope - I think Rename has more options than Batch Convertandalo wrote:Hi helmut,

Specifically it has Start / Step for the Counter, Replace etc.
Also Subfolder needs a check-box like New Filename. Not everyone wants to import in a generated subfolder. For example, I simply write the name of the photo journal in the Destination: C:\Pictures\My Last Photo Journal

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
...in fact I would THROW AWAY the „New filename” entirely.
I would do like this:
...and then I would use it all day.
Many people nowadays rename & convert straight out of the source (USB 3 CF/CFast cards for example) because the time is much, much minimized. Rename first (to adhere to the in-house standards to any news/media outlet) Convert after the renamed files in order to get out ASAP resized jpegs to upload to sites. Transfer to a safe place (HDDs /backups etc.) after. Sometimes tough we need to do this after the transfer (for ex. read-only source - CDs - or slow sources - ancient thumb drives etc.).
Of course, the {Options...} buttons will open the respective dialogs (Batch Rename and Batch Convert) with no files inside. We need to just alter the settings.
What do you think?

"Also Subfolder needs a check-box like New Filename"
indeed, it would e great.
Also "Many people nowadays rename & convert straight out of the source (USB 3 CF/CFast cards for example) because the time is much, much minimized" is right. I'm one of them, and planning Filename and Subfolders at beginning of import process, would mean less time later to organize database.
Would be also useful to keep in a "fovorite import options" different file import profiles. I would be like a bach actions for a standard operation in photoshop.
Just one time to plan and rec it, then just a click each futher time.
I'll take a closer look to your sketch later; if any suggestions (hope you appreciate), I'll post here
bye and thanks

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
Pierre, I'd like to make a suggestion which would be perhaps a bit more work but offer a lot of flexibility. Please wait till I've posted my suggestion before making any changes in this area.xnview wrote:O.k., i'll add template filename like batch rename Issue 1087 in next version.

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
Just a quick question regarding the Import and Sort function: Is there a way to import the pictures / files into the Destination folder, without creating Subfolders or Sorting into different folders (yyyy etc). I just want to import all the pictures and then I will move them to custom made folders.
Sorry, I saw that m.th has allready commented on this. I totally agree that it would be awesome if we could import the files into the Destination folder, without Sorting / Creating Subfolders. Maybe a checkbox for not creating Subfolders ?

Re: XnView MP import and sort: some questions
@ m.Th.
At last I took a look and though about it.
Looking at Xnconvert for ispiration, I found the software is quite complete in sorting output files options: similar options or just the same would be perfect.
Select and de-select "subfolders" creation is useful tool.
I've just a dobut about double "rename and convert" in source and destination. Maybe my english is just a bit rusty, and I do not understand exactly what you mean, but I perceive it as redundat.
It's my opinion that the "transformation" happens in the middle, therefore, original file remains as it was, but the software (read "CPU") "trasform" file in its memory, and then write to the destination "support" (HD, SD, site ans so on).
So, if you do not need also to change filename inside the original memory (I usually prefer to leave it as made by camera or database), you do not need the option above.
But it's just my personal point of view
@ Pierre
Nice meet you, being a newbie here, I'm glad to see my post got your attention. Thank you so much for your work. I'm not a programmer, but as I can, I'll try to help.
Thank you
