XnView offers two systems for classifying images. Ratings and colour labels.
Below please find some suggestions that might improve the user interface in this area.
Suggestions:
• Currently, there is one big menu for both star ratings and colour labels (View » Rating & Colour label). Instead, there should be two menus: View » Star rating and View » Colour label
• "Rating" could be renamed to "Star rating". This way the user knows without much thinking which of the two classifications he/she uses. Star rating and Colour label.
• The assignment of shortcuts is somewhat odd: Ctrl+5 will assign 5-star rating (best rating) but Ctrl+Shift+1 will assign "Important" (highest priority). Not sure whether there's something like a standard but this seems inconsistent to me. Short cuts for colour labels should be Ctrl+Shift+1 for "Later" and Ctrl+Shift+5 for "Important".

I am hesitating to change it because many are accustomed with this one. Personally, I would preffer Lr's / ASP ones (1,2,3,4,5).The assignment of shortcuts is somewhat odd:
"Important" isn't the 1st and not the last one. The color labels doesn't have an order. In other DAMs are simply noted as Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple etc. The default names in XnVIew MP are a plus. Personal preference: Important should be as is (Ctrl+Sh+1) because usually is the most used one.

I summarize:

With the keyboard shortcuts we have different opinions: I think if things are wrong or not good, they should be corrected or improved. But I think it's not so much the colour assignements but the modifiers: Why not use 1, ..., 5, and 0 for ratings (for example)?
