Thumbnail vs bitmap

Hi

Do a thumbnail have less quality than a bitmap? Let's say I want to display a picture in full screen, but the picture is originally larger than the screen (lets say 2000 pixels wide on a 1024 screen) - should I load the picture as a thumbnail or bitmap?
