Can't open webP images in XnViewMP 0.93

Post by joomlafab »

Hi,

I'm trying to open webP images (static images, not animated), in XnViewMP 0.93 64bits on Win10 64.

My "%PROGRAMFILES%\XnViewMP\plugins" folder contains 2dll : libwebp.dll (607 Ko) and libwebpmux.dll (160 Ko)

I can see the thumbnails images when I browse the folder with XnViewMp, but I can't enlarge them. The "Open" (Ctrl+O) and Full screen (F11) context menus are disabled/grayed. If I double-click some WebP images, they open in Chrome and I can see them though. I tried to set WnViewMp as default program to open WebP images, but then when I double-click a WebP image, it opens a news XnviewMp browser with thumbnails again, no full size image.

Am I doing something wrong ?

However xnViewMP was telling my version was up to date, I found here that there is a newer 0.93.1 version, that adresses some WebP issues. I updated, but it is still the same. Impossible to open/full screen webP images.

Hi Pierre,

thanks for your anwser (and for your great work with Xnview softs). I actually already replied myself that the problem probably comes from my photoshop plugin, but my reply wasn't accepted for some reason.

I actually found out that when I download some webP sample from https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/gallery1, they have a few exif data, and they open fine in XnViewMP. However, the webP files produced by my photoshop plugin (http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/WebPFormat ) don't seem to have any exif data and they don't open in XNViewMP. They open fine in firefox, and sometimes fine sometimes not in chrome...
Sorry for wasting your time, the faulty photoshop plugin is probably the reason of this.

Just in case, you'll find a sample file attached. I had to zip the file since this forum doesn't accept webP file attachements.

the WEBP tools can't decode it too, the file is corrupt (premature end of file)

Are animated webp files even supported? XNView refuses to open them, but they work just fine in internet browser.

Can webm have .webp extension instead?
The beginning of the file says "RIFF¦2 WEBPVP8X". What is that?

After more than a year, the problem is....unsolved, although it was solved! Why I say this? Because it was solved somewhere between 0.92 and 0.95 versions. Then, on the 0.97 version, it got broken again! The last version, 0.98.0, still has this bug. So, if you want to use a version that can open webp and svg files without problems, use 0.96.5 version, it works like a charm. I hope this problem gets attention from the devs, because it's so easy to reproduce: just open any webp file and it will open the browser window and not the file; from the browser window, if you double click on the webp file, it will open just fine, but not directly. So, just use 0.96.5 version until they solve it and keep it solved.

xnview, after your reply, I went again through the Windows default apps, association by type and Windows registry and everything seemed fine. Versions 0.95.0 and 0.96.5 worked perfectly but 0.97.0 and 0.98.0 not.

Then, I dived some more into the registry and found some old ACDSee 2.5 Pro entries, although XnViewMP was the main association for all formats; but those enries were there, so I deleted all of them manually. And, after a restart and installing XnViewMP 0.98.0 again, it now works with webp too!

So, the problem seems to be related to old entries from third party graphics software. So thank you for your software and for the time spent in solving bugs!
