When I want to 'save as ' an image and i am typing the new file name "without looking at the screen" I look up and find I'm typing into the file type window.
What the heck am I doing wrong?

With Windows 'Show file extensions' off, filename extension not displayed, keying Ctrl + Shift + S for 'Save as...' selects the filename...
With Windows 'Show file extensions' selected, filename extension displayed, keying Ctrl + Shift + S for 'Save as...' selects the filename + extension, so when a key is pressed the key entered replaces the filename and extension...
That's for my Windows 7, XnView MP 0.93, does that provide any insight into your situation, or enable you to define in more detail what is happening?
Otherwise, possibly a screenshot immediately after you select 'Save as...' ?
