I have a RAW file (.ORF), plus a matching XMP file with categories, rating and color labels.
If a new rating or color label is set (right mouse button / menu), then the categories are deleted from the XMP file when saving (de-select).
This will clear the attributes xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" and xmlns:lr="http://ns.adobe.com/lightroom/1.0/" and the elements <dc:subject> and <lr:hierarchicalSubject>.
Categories can only be set via the category list or "Update files from catalog", then they are also written correctly to the XMP file.
Everything is fine with JPG files, the behavior probably only affects RAW files (here: .ORF).
