[Resolved] How to share XnViewMP on dualboot

Post by Jean-MarcDD »

Hi,

I've got Windows and LinuxMint as dualboot on my PC.
I often switch from one OS to the other, depending on my needs.

I would like to have my XnViewMP data being shared between the two systems, so that everything is up-to-date every time I boot on a system or another.

Is it possible ? How can I get this ?

Thanks

JM

The location of the database setting etc. can be set in Tools > Settings...

So as far as I know as a Windows user, you should therefore be able to set common locations for those files using the 'Custom' option.

The location of the .ini file in the Windows version of XnViewMP, however, can only be set to 'Windows' locations, so depending on the options available in the Linux version you may not be able to set a common location for that: you might therefore have to live with separate ini settings, or synchronise the two files periodically...

To complete and get a fullly functional syste m:
On each system (Ms & Linux), the option

Tools/Option/Explorer/Catalog/Base directory for pictures

must be set on a same directory so that files are considered with their filename relative to this root directory and can then be accessed from the two OS.

Setting the base directory this way works if all your pictures are all on one drive. If you have them spread over many drives like me, you need go into Windows disk management and reconfigure all your drives with pictures as directories. This requires at least one drive be formatted as NTFS before you start.
If you don't already have one, you only need to set aside 1MB of space for this new NTFS drive as nothing will be stored there except empty folders that point to your drives.
Make sure that you name your drives in windows the exact same way they are labeled in linux.
If all your pictures are on internal drives, the drive labels in linux should be found in the /dev/ directory.
If all your pictures are on external drives, the drive labels in linux should be found in the /media/ directory.
If your pictures are all over the place, you will need to create both a dev and media directory on the NTFS drive, then place your new drive pointers in the proper directory. Then you can set your base picture directory to the top level .. in windows and to root / in linux.
Then make sure that the XNView integration for the catalog and database point to a location that can be accessed by both windows and linux.
