My dream software for managing video files?

Post by rickvdvulkaan »

Hello,

First of all, please forgive me if all the things i am about to say are possible and coming off as lazy, i'm still in the orientation phase.
I'm working for a small video production company. Things are growing fast and I am looking for software to manage all assets on the network drive.

What im mostly looking for specifically is tagging/managing literally all files. when there has been a day of shooting, i would like to tag information like location, product name, mood, etc.

so that eventually i can type in the location and all those files pop up.

this really sounds like a metadata thing which should be possible with ease. So i googled for such software and landed here. Seems like a no brainer when i look at the price and all the functionalities so i dedided to download the personal-use version to try it out.

however, already at the first try i stranded at some folders with mxf files. they are not playable and there are no thumbnails showing. so i started googling and installed ffmpeg, no result. maybe i need some kind of plugin? also, the xmp-metadata seem to be greyed out. I was not able to solve it so far. R3d files also cant be tagged it seems. it looks like tagging with xmp-metadata really depends on the filetype. is there a workaround so that it basically works for all files?

Before i start digging in bigtime, Is this even the sofware im looking for? I also saw software like acdsee, adobe bridge, etc. Also did a quick try but i stranded on the same things.

It wouldnt be a huge problem if only previewing wouldn't work, but i should be able to tag everything? I think i need a push in the right direction.

I can read .mxf metadata with last version of exiftool. So perhaps you can modify those metadata. Adding internal metadata is more tricky as you can break your file due to modification of sections offsets or incompatibility with standard.
The way to add metadata could be to use XMP sidecar? but I fear that in present state xnviewMP is unable to manage video files in the same way as still images (it doesnt even display video thumbnail) and I don't feel it is on the dev to do list.
Sorry, but I cannot really help you further.
Perhaps give a try to https://www.digikam.org/ (I don't use it) .
