Writing GPS data and _original files

I have noticed when I add GPS data a duplicate of the file is created with "_original." But when I update IPTC data, no copy is generated.

Is this expected behavior?

I'm fine with with just one file, but is there some special reason it creates a backup of the original when writing GPS data?

I am using Xnview MP Windows, version 0.98 (I also use the Linux app Image on my Chromebook).

you can change it in settings>General>File operations - Make backup...
