How do I play AVI-files?

My camera produces avi-files instead of mpeg.

When I see my photos (jpeg) and videos (avi) as a slideshow I only hear the sound as the avi is played.

I have tried to associate avi-files to Windows Media-player as well as to Quick-time, but nothing seems to help.

Is there a work-around?

Which OS do you have? If you try to play avi with Windows media player, it works?
