Crop Image to Current View

Post by GreenKnight »

Sometimes while viewing photos, you have zoomed a certain amount into an image, and you would love to be able to crop it exactly as shown in fullscreen view - but you can't... If you could add a key combo such as "Ctrl-/" or else Ctrl-Shift /" or something...?

Much better that way, than to have to go into a crop function and estimate the level to re-zoom zoom in order to crop out the outer area of a photo. Thanks!

Shift-X works for me, does it work for you?

Shift-x seems to bring the image into a crop-type screen but I couldn't save it...?

On checking, Shift-X is the keyboard shortcut for Edit > Crop... in the viewer.

I make a selection, hit Shift-X and the image is cropped to the selection rectangle, which can then be saved in the usual way.

I presume that you are using XnView MP not XnView Classic, which I can't easily check as I am in Linux.

Yes. XnView MP. If there is a way to do it in MP, that would be great.

I have used Irfanview as an image viewer for many years, and after recently checking XnView out, I am switching.

I think we must be at cross-purposes, I have no problem making a selection on an image in normal view or fullscreen, cropping to that selection and then saving, could you try explaining what you need to do in another way...

Sure... Deliberately going into the Crop function to crop is no problem.

But the shortcut I'm suggesting is for use when you are in normal full screen viewing mode browsing through your new photos. As you zoom into a certain photo you suddenly realize, "Aha!". I should save a Crop of this photo exactly as I'm viewing it now... But there's no way to immediately do that inside Irfanviw or XnView, so you bail out of Full Screen mode and the program automatically resets you back to viewing that full photo on screen. Then you select the Crop Tool and try to remember exactly where it was zoomed to before in Full Screen mode. Finally, you get the crop square reasonably close to what you remembered was the "magic" crop from before. Then you finally can Save As...

If only there had been a shortcut to "Save As... the Current On-screen Zoomed View"

(And I don't mean to use Prt-Scrn bc it's not the full rez saved version it could have been if using my shortcut idea above.)

In a way, yes. But a svreen capture is only as good as your current display resokution, whereas a crop respects the full resolution and integrity of the image... But practically speaking, it's similar.
