Hi There,
Maybe I'm completely missing the point, but I came upon XnView because I wanted to be able to do bulk updates of ratings. XnView seemed to be able to do that, but by the looks of it, only does so in a "shadow" .xmp file; the star rating that is part of the metadata in Windows, is not updated.
Am I missing something and is there an option to do this, or should a look for another tool (or actually: an additional tool, because XnView does seem to have some very useful features.
Bye, Jan

Then there must be something I'm missing. When I select all pictures in a directory in XnView, then set the rating to 3 stars, this will only be visible in XnView, not in Explorer. In the attached screenshot, you can see the photo received three stars, but in Explorer, it shows as unrated.
Re: NTFS metadata not updated
Windows doesn't detect changes if you keep file date, please try to disable the setting

Yes, that is the way around it! I have to think if this is an acceptable solution. For my own photo's it isn't a big issue because the Date Taken attributes will tell me the actual date the Photo was taken. But for pictures without EXIF data, it is annoying that all dates will change. More so since not only Date Modified is changed, but also Date Created.
For now I'm happy you pointed this out. You obviously know more about XnView than I do, so if you have more ideas on this, I'd like to hear them. If not, I'll have to decide if I can live with this.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
