The large unused area at bottom right, which is a consequence of the large selected thumbnail size?

XnView MP offers a lot of settings and is very configurable. Not all settings fit to all users and you can even misconfigure XnView MP so that it gets useless unless you change settings, again.
Currently, you're using Layout 3 - this layout is perfect for those people with deep folder/category hierarchies. In your case the folder hierarchy is pretty flat - Layout 1 or Layout 4 are maybe a better choice for you. You can change the layout in menu "View > Layout > ...". In addition you can resize each single area and you can drag&drop panels and dock them in a different way - but I assume you already know and tried this.
