1.0: Batch conversion JPG to HEIC - high memory usage (>6 GB RAM) and crash!

Post by masterjp »

Today I converted different picture files (max size: 2.000 x 3.000 pixels) from jpeg file to heic format (resized to longest side: 2.560 pixels) in the batch conversion window of XnviewMP. I selected around 3.000 pictures for conversion.

The batch conversion used a multi core CPU usage (2 cores) and the RAM usage rises up to 6 GB RAM and more after 10 minutes.
XnViewMP crashed after around 30 Minutes. The only way to prevent this crash is to use the program rammap.exe from Sysinternals Suite,
which free up the memory of every program. After that, the XnViewMP memory usage is around 500 MB!

I think the memory usage was to high and that is the reason why XnviewMP crashed!

Please free up the used memory after the conversion of every file.

if you don't use multi core in XnViewMP, same problem?

I tested the single core mode in XnViewMP 1.0 again and got the same or higher RAM usage after 1 hour of conversion.

Sorry, but I converted my whole picture archiv of my camera with around 8.000 jpeg files.
After around 1.000 files the ram usage is at 5 GB RAM and increase slowly.
After one hour (or later) the ram usage is so high that xnviewmp crashed.
It was an out of memory problem.

Maybe the reason is not the heif encoder and somewhere else.
I resized the pictures to longest side = 2.560 pixels.
Maybe here could be the increasing ram usage.

Today I tried it again with another camera folder.
