Default resolution for PS/PDF files too low

Post by helmut »

In combination with Ghostscript XnView is able to display Postscript and PDF files, see FAQ "How to display vector formats like PDF, AI,...? GhostScript!"

Currently (XnView MP 1.00), default resolution for Postscript and PDF files is 72 dpi. This is o.k. and fast but not very detailed.

Suggestion: By default, resolution (dpI) could be something like 200 dpi or even 300 dpi.

It's the first setting I change. PDF files are unusable at 72 dpi.
The problem is.... generating the thumbnails becomes quite slow in folders with several pdf files (talking about image and vector single page files). I've got it set to 150, which is still slow for large folders, but usable.
Is there no other way to speed this up?

Thank you for confirming that there's an issue.

Hmm, sounds as if XnView uses same DPI for displaying and thumbnail creation. For thumbnail creation a low DPI values is sufficient while for viewing a high DPI value is needed so it would make much sense if XnView used different DPI values for thumbnail creation and displaying.

That would be great and would solve two problems in one go (slow thumbnail generation and bad pdf resolution), if that is indeed the issue. 72 dpi is plenty for a thumbnail. Its only when opening it that it requires much higher dpi as most people that use pdf as a file format use it to include at least some vectors or text that isn't really visible at low resolution settings.
