Issue with DNG and Keywords

I just downloaded XnViewMP and am putting it through its paces. Specifically I'm interested in keyword compatibility between XnViewMP, Lightroom, and EXIFTOOL. Things were looking OK until I got to my DNG files. I created a hierarchical keyword using Lightroom and wrote it out to the DNG file. Went to XnView and updated catalog from files. XnView was able to see it OK. However, going in the other direction, making a new keyword using XnView and writing it out caused an XMP file to be created rather than updating the meta-data in the DNG itself. I could see it with EXIFTOOL by specifically reading the XMP file but Light room expects it in the DNG file and it ignores the XMP.

Is there a workaround for this?
