Print preview image resolution

Post by Hans L »

Not sure if this is 'per app' or generic to Windows printing function.

Can you set the XnView MP preview print image to full resolution (instead of reduced resolution that I now have)?

Thanks for your response.

No, I do not want to zoom. The attached image shows what my print preview looks like (for text; images look normal). I would want text to be readable in print preview.

Better readability requires more pixels, you can resize the preview window yourself to a certain extent, but otherwise you need a screen with larger pixel dimensions. Even if the preview window could be maximised, the previewed page would always be smaller than the screen...

Three comments:

• No resolution problems in Print Preview window for docx files

• I distinctly remember having read, sometimes in the distant past, that you can set the resolution in the Print Preview window.

• Why do graphics in jpg files look okay, but not text in jpg files?

It does certainly look bad, but the image has had to be down-sampled for display in the preview window, and may not have been optimally resampled??

Is your example image file black and white (1-bit rather than 24-bit), and could you give the pixel dimensions? An example file with the same properties, if you are able to post one, could be helpful.

Yeah, but why would resampling not work (XnView MP?)?

Width: 891 pixels
Height: 700 pixels
Horizontal resolution: 72 dpi
Vertical resolution: 72 dpi
Bit depth: 24

Original jpg file attached.

O.K., your image is a screenshot, saved as a JPEG (PNG can produce sharper images for screenshots...), DPI shows as 96DPI which is quite low for the image dimensions...

My reference above to resampling relates to the fact that when an image is resized it is normally resampled, to as far as possible maximise the quality of the resulting image. There are a number of alternative algorithms, some better suited to particular downsizing or upsizing conditions.

Did you try resizing the preview window by dragging the sides? With that done to some extent your image displays somewhat better on my FHD screen, click on the image below to maximise it:

Now, suddenly, I get a better Preview resolution. Go figure.

I use ClipMate as my clipboard app (no longer supported; maybe I should look for some other app), and I use ClipMate too to create files from clips (screenshot in this case). Maybe the lower resolution emanates from ClipMate?

I cannot drag the sides in the Preview window.

As for resampling, I am not knowledgeable enough to grasp what you are saying.

Looking again, you should be able to resize the whole Print window, rather than the Preview part.

Smoothing is probably a better term, a selection of alternative methods is normally available when an image is resized, in Image > Resize... a drop-down titled Method if you take a look. The optimum method to use depends on various factors, lots of information on the forum or internet if you search.
