1.3.1: Export Category to XMP vs. Thumbnail rotation

Post by dietmar »

XnView MP Linux
Version 1.3.1 64bits (Oct 12 2022)
Libformat version 7.126

If "Export Catalog's Category to XMP Subject" is on and "Create XMP data" is on, writing the XMP data into the file confuses XnView's ability to correctly rotate the thumbnail of a Portrait-oriented image.

Effect: Thumbnail is rotated wrongly.

To reproduce:
1. Set "Export Catalog's Category to XMP subject" to on and set "Create XMP data" to on.
2. Browse to any folder containing an image in Portrait mode (EXIF Orientation = Rotate 90 CW)
3. Pick any category to assign this category to the Portrait-oriented image
4. Change to a different folder.
5. Return to the previous folder.
Actual behaviour (bug): Image thumbnail is rotated to Landscape :bug:

Expected behaviour: Thumbnail rotation should not change when adding XMP data to image file.

Workaround: View -> Rebuild Thumbnails corrects the thumbnail orientation

Hi Pierre, thanks for looking back at this problem.

In 1.6.5 tumbnails keep their orientation correctly when adding categories (XMP). Thus the problem is solved, thanks!
Previously mis-rotated thumbnails (from 1.3.1) still keep their wrong rotation, though. Even Rebuild Thumbnails doesn't solve this. You have to change categories (e.g. uncheck one, move to a different image, move back, recheck the category, move again) to repair mis-rotated thumbnails.

BTW: Last week I fought some fight with 1.6.5 on Ubuntu 20.04. I guess you know, but the most recent supported version of libheif for Ubuntu 20.04 is version 1.6.1. This one crashes MP instantly as soon as MP tries to build a thumbnail for an HEIC image, e.g. when browsing to a folder having a new or changed HEIC. I guess you know that this results in a segmentation fault and crash. 1.6.5 on Ubuntu 22.04 with the supported libheif 1.12.1 works as it should.

Best regards
Dietmar
