Opening Files in XnView for Linux

Post by carlaero »

🌈 All the best in the new year for all! 👍

Background

I'm currently testing if it is possible to replace Windows 10 completely with Linux without using dual boot. That means I have to find programs for Linux that I can use in the same troublefree and easy way as in Windows or my daily mundane and hobby tasks.

For image processing I used good old Photoshop 7, wich perfectly suited my humble needs and had an uncluttered GUI. For smaller, quick tasks I used the reliable 2005 vintage ThumbPlus 7 and paint.net.

Photoshop will be replaced with Gimp if all goes well. XnView is the perfect choice to replace the latter two programs and will do it in Windows anyway.

Problem

On testing XnView I noticed that I have no access to data on the harddisk beyond the Linux Home folder. That is, I cannot use files concurrently with Windows on a common separate data SSD as planned for preliminary dual use in the testing phase. If Linux will be the my sole OS I will, as before in Windows, store all data on a separate SSD.

It is interesting that some Linux programs have the same restrictions but others not. So that cannot be a Linux problem as such.

Is the "open file" action in XnView firmly programmed or is there a setting to have access to "other locations" as some programs call it.

Thank, Pierre for the prompt reply.

But who/what sets these rights? Obviously the programs, in this case XnView?
