Crashing & Freezing

Post by BruceHayes »

Subject: 0.99.7: Crashing & Freezing

XnView: MP 0.99.7 - 32 bit/64 bit
OS: Mac/64bit

App either crashes or freezes

Effect: <What's the effect for the user? Examples: Program crashes, Program hangs, files are deleted, display glitch, focus is lost, ...>

To reproduce:
1.Open a photo that's in a folder with XnView
2. Press ESC to close photo and see all contents of the folder

Actual behaviour (bug): After pressing ESC the App either crashes or goes to a black screen

Expected behaviour: App not to crash and all photos appear as they should

I go to a folder on my Mac. I open it it. I select a photo, then OPEN WITH... XnView.I get what you see in Photo 01. Then I press ESC expecting to see the entire contents of the folder that this photo sits in. Instead I get what you see in Photo 02. At that point the only think I can do is close XnView, as you see in Photo 3. Thank you.

I don't know the explanation for what you are seeing, but as you are using the Esc key you might take a look this setting:

Tools > Settings... > Interface -- Keyboard tab -- Pressing Esc once quits XnViewMP .....

And also to possibly better understand how your installation is configured and alternative options, this setting:

Tools > Settings... > General -- General tab -- Mode when starting with a file .....

I do not see this sequence of actions in XnView. After “TOOLS” I do not see “SETTINGS.” Am I looking in the right place?

Tools > Settings... > Interface -- Keyboard tab -- Pressing Esc once quits XnViewMP .....

Tools > Settings... > General -- General tab -- Mode when starting with a file .....

You should see Tools > Settings... in the menu in both the file browser and viewer/editor, if you really don't possibly your installation is somehow broken??

In your first screenshot you appear to have opened a file in fullscreen, in the second you appear to be in the browser with the menu bar displayed but none of the other usual browser displayed. If you click on Tools don't you see Settings... at the bottom of the list?

It may appear I am in fullscreen, but I am not. Here is a screenshot of the tools dropdown menu in XnView.

This is what I see in Linux and Windows should be the same:

Screen-2023-03-11_19-21-40.png

The Mac version would seem to have a different menu and I am afraid I have no idea why! Possibly in Macs the equivalent option is conventionally placed elsewhere?

You could possibly explore other menus in both the browser and viewer to look for an equivalent option, there must I am sure be one otherwise use of the program would be greatly limited. If necessary, as a last resort, you could try a reinstalling although it seems unlikely that would provide a solution.

Can another Mac user comment?

While I think you were online I inserted the following text into my post: 'Possibly in Macs the equivalent option is conventionally placed elsewhere?'

That seems very likely, so searching the menus, or your familiarity with other apps, might well provide the answer.

I can only suggest trying reinstalling, after if possible checking the download checksum. Are you downloading directly from the xnview site?
