Search results don't continue applying as filters in the way that when you go to displaying an image and try to browse through the images with arrow keys and the like, you'd be shown only images from your search results. Should they, though? I hardly can imagine a use for the displaying images mode browsing through all images while the browser only displays some images. That's just weird that there's such separation of functionality.
It seems that you have filtering settings that continue applying while the images are displayed and you are browsing between them with arrow keys or the like, so it sounds like this change should be doable even with your system where you can have images open in multiple tabs.
Due to the current state of how quick search works, I've been sometimes switching back to another image viewing application, Gwenview, where search and filtering are one and the same, just called filters. Another advantage over XnView is that the filter bar also allows for AND conditions, unlike (it's seeemed at least) your current quick search, but that's a consideration for another time, maybe.

Re: Filter by search results
I use "All", "All", "All" filters. I've hardly touched them at all. What I'm talking about is making (quick) search act like a filter, so its effect would continue to the view mode. So, if I put "flower" into the quick search bar, I'd only be browsing through files that have "flower" in their file name in the view mode as well.
Re: Filter by search results
ok i understand, if you use 'quick filter', the filelist is not kept

Re: Filter by search results
It would seem to, yeah.
Although I've been using XnViewMP less due to the relative slowness plus how even with the flatpak version videos now crash the program. Flatpak was "supposed" to be a distribution format that eliminates library version incompatibilities, but I guess without an officially updated one it's still not doing that job. Are we ever going to get an official flatpak?

Exactly, and there lies the problem, it's unofficial. It's been suggested before that you would take over the project: https://forum.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=43882&p=180372
