Weird dots in thumbnails in browser

Post by Yoksven »

Image

So, basically, ^this^. Dots only appear in browser thumbnails, not in a full image view (and I haven't seen them in regular file explorer thumbnails either). It's only 3 images so far (out of a couple of thousands), so not really a big deal, but these dots persist even if I rebuild thumbnails, even if I change thumbnail size and rebuild, and even if I re-save the images as new jpgs. Re-saving in png makes them go away.

Here are these 3 image files in question, maybe they can provide some insight.

P.S.: If the person who answered my email will see it: I've managed to get through the registration in private mode. Maybe one of my addons/extentions was tripping something up.

Let me know if you also need submenus.

Also, I found one folder that I haven't looked at after setting up the browser that is just infested with these dots. And I thought they only affect the pure white color, but apparently not.

Yes, at any zoom level. They seem to be backed into the thumbnails and scale up/down with them. And I don't know if I'm using font scaling. I'm not even sure how to check.

So... the issue seems to suddenly disappear.

I decided to change the thumbnail size again by just one pixel smaller and I rebuilt the thumbnails and - now there are no dots. I don't know what I did differently this time, but, yeah. I'll report if I happen upon them, but so far, in all the instances where they would just not go away - gone away. Which is weird, because I've resized and rebuild thumbnails before, and they would still be there, but now suddenly - nothing.

Nope. Celebrated too soon. It's now on a different image.

So far I've only seen two, which is not a lot, but not zero, and that probably means I'll stumble onto more of them later.

dots.zip

There are two folders in there. One with old thumbnail size settings (470x470) and another with the new settings (469x469). New settings one has only two images and one of those images only has dots on a folder preview, but not on the thumbnail itself.

Sorry for the wait, didn't see the email notification (or rather "didn't got" cause I still don't see it).

Currently I have 469x469 thumbnail size set in catalogue settings and I'm using 4 column automatic resize in browser which is also 469x469 on my monitor (1920x1080). Before that, when I first wrote about this problem, I was using 470x470 in catalogue and wasn't using an automatic resizing, but had a custom thumbnail size set to 470x470 as well.

Here's the current xnview.ini.

the problem is catalog thumbnail size (469x469), which is resized to thumbnail size (470x470). If i change catalog thumbnail size to 470, no more problem...

Well, at 470x470 catalog thumbnail size there is a different problem of blurring, which I assume happens because of a mismatch between the pre-built thumbnail size and the final output thumbnail size that needs to be displayed in the end. And I'd rather take dots on two random images then blurring.

Top is catalogue size 469x469, bottom is 470x470 (the image is resized by the forum engine, so open in a separate tag to see the blurring clearly)
Image

Also, interestingly, the dots on the folder didn't care about 470x470 size change, just got blurry (I've even resized the image inside the folder as well). Although the dots on the other image did disappear at 470x470
Image

And also, interestingly, the dots don't reappear on the images that they used to be on at 470x470 size (because I did had both view thumbnails size and catalogue thumbnail size set to 470x470 at the beginning). I didn't do extensive testing with my entire collection, because right now I don't feel like spending a couple of hours resizing all my thumbnails and then staring at them for hours looking for dots. Maybe later. But I have a sneaking suspicion that the dots have simply moved to different images again. They seem to work in mysterious ways. But I might be wrong.

Anyway. If that's the best solution you got, then I'll stick with 469x469 and the two dotted images. But thanks for your time.
I will write if I do try to resize all my thumbnails and do spend hours looking for dots. If I'll find them or not, I'll report my findings (if I'll attempt this).
