Update on this topic.
There have been two XnView updates since this was raised. It does not seem to be anywhere near such a problem as I found initially but it does still occasionally occur. I think that this is because as my project is maturing I do not change the category keywords anywhere near as much as initially. I am still checking the number of assigned values agree with the number of XMP data values stored every time I change a keyword value which is quite an onerous extra task, but rarely find any discrepancy nowadays.
My feeling is that the problem was caused by occasional erroneous drop and drag in the categories pane and somehow putting things back is/was able to foul up the database.
I also get problems with drop and drag occasionally in the Folders panel where I sometimes erroneously copy a whole folder containing thousands of images to somewhere in the directory structure. This also seems to be able to foul up the database, at least with respect to thumbnails.
I don't want to investigate that problem here, but suggest there are good reasons to having the option of turning off drag and drop.
