GPS metadata -> IPTC geotags -> keywords (categories)

Post by pi7603 »

Hi Everybody !

I’m using XnView MP for almost a week after using different softwares.

I would like to know if it’s possible to fill IPTC geotags from GPS metadata (reverse geocoding) and then create keywords (categories) from these geotags.
I would like to quickly find photos taken in a location.
Not sure it could be done in XnView MP.
Maybe using other software (GeoSetter, ExifTool) and then XnView MP.

Thanks for helping.

I think you mean automatically fill city, state, country from GPS coordinates ? It's not currently possible with XnViewMp. I don't know any other solution than Geosetter.

Then, in XnViewMp, you can use Metadata>Transfer to copy some geographical informations into keywords (and then export keywords into categories) so catalog filter will be efficient.

I'm using a batch with ExifTool to copy city names into descript.ion files attached to parent directories, then the "quick search" in XnViewMp finds easily folders containing the city I'm looking for.

You can also use Fastphototagger (freeware), it's database is fully configurable, you can choose any metadata to be in the db, and build complex queries...

Hi Michel !

Thanks for your answer. I’m reading your how-to these days by the way.
That’s what I meant (fill Country / State / City fields).
I used Geosetter. With reverse geocoding, it fills the Photoshop fields. I’m using xmp metadada.
Problem is that these fields does not appear in Metadata>Transfer.

Regards.
