XnViewMP 1.6.5 (just installed for first time)
Windows 11 Home
Surface Pro 8 tablet + keyboard and mouse
After moving the catalog files via the settings dialog, the 20 or so categories I had set up had disappeared. After recreating the categories, I wanted to export the category list in case I had a similar problem again. However I was unable to do so:
1) In the category panel context menu, select Catalog > Export.
2) Enter a filename in the Save As dialog and press Enter.
3) Get the message:
XnView Categories. File not found. Check the filename and try again.
It appears that the Export menu item is actually set to import the category list instead of exporting it. This theory is backed up by the fact the (supposed) Save As dialog actually has an Open button instead of a Save button.
Note that I could not find another menu/context menu with an option to export the category list. There is a button under Settings > Catalog > Tools to Import XnView Category db... but no corresponding export button. Perhaps there should be such a button here.

Re: Cannot export category list
If you want to get only a (txt) list of categories, use "Categories management" > "export categories file" , in the drop down menu of Categories pane.
If you want to save the catalog (links between categories and files) , there is the method shown by user0 , or copy xnview.db file to a different place.

Re: Cannot export category list
Ooops! I had spotted this previously but in my tiredness I got this confused with with the Category panel's "Catalog > Export" menu item. In fact, unlike the equivalent item in the File menu which works fine, this particular menu item fails as I described in my original post and is therefore, I believe, still a bug.michel038:

Even so, I will be much more careful before I post again and waste anyone's time.
Many thanks for both your replies. Cheers!
