Help me understand "Orientation"

Post by mrwul »

In Directory Opus I wanted to resize a photo. It showed up as 90 degr CCW.
Checked out the properties within XnViewMP

Exif says "Right-top (6)"
XnViewMP says "Top Left"

Maybe they are the same, I have no idea.

I mostly use Directory Opus to resize (because it is easy, it is just 1 click in the context menu)
The photo shows up 90 degr CCW there.

It seems to have something to do with the orientation of the original (?) or something like that
Sorry, but I am not familiar with this, no idea what this means.

Photo shot with Samsung S10 smartphone.
As far as I remember I shot it as 'portrait'.

Hopefully someone out there can shed some light on this..?

I assume .. 'Top Left' means 'portrait' ?

Thanks!

Are you opening the original image or a modified (by Directory Opus) image in XnViewMP?
You need to share you image(s).

File is nothing special, just a photo of a TV settings.

Thing is: it is displayed 90 degr CCW in Opus just before resizing but the results are usually correct.
It is said to have something to do with the original orientation, or something....

Photo is portrait, the original and resized are both displayed as portrait.
When adding here as an attachment, it is rotated nonetheless.

they are different things:
  • Image Origin
x,y coordinates where image "starts" (ref stackexchange)
  • EXIF Orientation
    1. top-left (horizontal / normal)
    2. top-right (mirror horizontal)
    3. bottom-right (rotate 180)
    4. bottom-left (mirror vertical)
    5. left-top (mirror horizontal and rotate 270 CW)
    6. right-top (Rotate 90 CW)
    7. right-bottom (mirror horizontal and rotate 90 CW)
    8. left-bottom (rotate 270 CW)

im having the same issue
EXIF data shows orientation as right-top (6)
XnViewMP shows Origin as Top Left
However, the thumbnails are portrait, and the photo was taken in portrait mode.
I just dumped over 20k pics from my phone onto my pc and now im dealing with this
here's the pics
