Post by G.Pard »

XNView MP 1.8.0 and 1.7.2
OS Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia, Linux Mint 22, Kubuntu 24.04 LTS

Print dialog only displays option to print to PDF file. The connected printer is not shown in the dialog.
Printer is available for other applications. The printer is connected over IP

Effect: Cannot print

Reproduced on other PCs: I have installed it on one PC and two virtual machines on another PC. Same result,
Expected behavior: The connected sprinter is shown in the print dialog and it is possible to do a printout of a picture

I have used XNView as my go-to image editor and printer for 4 years from Trisquel, but I have just switched to Zorin 17 on the same machine, and have now run into this problem. My get-out-of-jail work-round has been to edit the image in XnView and then import it into LibreOffice, from where it has printed perfectly happily.
It looks as if XnView simply isn't 'seeing' the printer.

Is there some manual way to 'install' or configure it ?

Many thanks.

I hoped I might have had an inspiration overnight. I'm pretty sure last night I booted up XnView first, and then fired up the printer only when I was ready to print. Maybe the printer needed to be 'live' before XnView was opened for XnView to be able to 'see' it ?

But I've tried that this morning, and XnView still offers only the print to file option.

I recognise this issue in Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2, but in a test today have managed to print on paper once... :?:

Unhelpfully, I have been unable to repeat that, and so determine the circumstances in which it was possible... :(

Seemingly, possibly related to the sequence in terms of power on, and then display of the printer in the print menu; I also print over WiFi on a Xerox AIO.

I have taken my earlier speculation a stage further, by uninstalling XnView entirely, making sure the Printer is 'on' and then re-installing. But that doesn't change anything, either.
I can note, however, that both GIMP, and the Image Viewer installed in Zorin, print images, from the same computer to the same printer - so it does look as if the problem is somewhere relating to configuration or 'permissions' specific to XnView.

I am currently able to print consistently, not sure whether that will remain the case when something changes. At the moment the following sequence works:

Select File > Print... and then click the Print... button;

The print dialog opens displaying my Xerox AIO, the only printer currently installed;

When I click Print the printer consistently prints successfully.

Possibly something subtle in the Print dialog is misleading and is causing confusion?

In my XnView MP installation in Linux Mint Cinnamon, when the printer select dropdown arrow is clicked, there is a gap between the printer shown in the window above the dropdown list and the PDF print to file option below displaying a grayed out path: if that is normal that gap could suggest that something is missing... :?:

However, in my installation the gap might possibly be due to my having previously been able to choose between two printer installations??

Are you able to reproduce, and if so can you describe how the printer interface in the other softwares from which you can print differs?

Glad you seem to be provisionally sorted - but you're not sure what made the difference ?

I've just been through the 'print' process again, taking a series of screen dumps step by step, but I really don't think there's any point in editing and posting them. The crucial point remains that the process goes to Print to file, and the down chevron on the printer doesn't even produce a drop down.

I will keep reading any thing that comes up here, but I'm not going to spend any more time on it without a clear prompt as to something to 'do'. Life's full of work-rounds, and it's no great matter to edit in XnView and print through something else.

No...

My only suggestions at the moment would be to try ignoring the dropdown to the right of the selected printer entry, and then try printing anyway, and if that doesn't work to carefully compare the print interface with those in the softwares from which you are able to print.

I very rarely print from XnView MP, but have done so successfully fairly recently.

Brief update: I'm seeing a different print interface today to the one I saw repeatedly yesterday:

Print dialog screenshot_2.png
Print dialog screenshot_2.png (19.22 KiB) Viewed 3933 times

In the above interface, clicking on the dropdown does not display a list of installed printers...

This is the interface I saw repeatedly yesterday:

Print dialog screenshot_1.png

No idea why I am seeing a different interface today and no time to investigate, but maybe the above issue is something Pierre could investigate if he is following the thread... :?:

Edit: I realised later that the printer wasn't switched on, and so wasn't an available printer...

Backing up, my printer is displayed as a print option (and I am able to print) on laptops running the following Linux Mint Cinnamon versions: 20.2, 21.3 and 22.

In each case, XnView MP was installed using the DEB download, so maybe that is significant? Possibly a missing dependency or something similar in some other downloads... :?:

Could be that.
I shall continue to watch this thread, and if a clear route to a solution emerges, I'll take it. But I mainly use XnView for editing stuff that will stay digital. Printing directly from it is relatively less urgent, and there are ways round.
Thanks for your persistence, anyway !

If you're using the Flatpak version you will not see your printer because XnView is in a sandbox. Open Flatseal (install it if you haven't got it) then XnView MP should be visible if you are using the Flatpak version. I turned 'Network', 'Printing System' and 'All Devices' to On. The functions I have selected may be one too many but it works for me.
