Slow startup, seems to access external drives - Linux

Post by xnviewlinuxguy »

Version 1.8.x

Clicking on an image and opening Xnviewmp for a jpg image is slow, and seems to access all drives to read from them.

Needs to be a setting to not do this, as it's not necessary in most cases.

If I understand you correctly, no.

This is opening an image in Dolphin or Krusader and opens in the full 3-pane layout of the browser.

if you open an image file in (as a tab) in XnView, no problem?

No problems with that. This is just when I am opening xnview for the first time, after it hasn't been open for awhile. Seems like it's caching and searching for all connected drives, etc. and spending a lot of time on that.

I'd love to be able to turn off that searching. I've even put in paths to ignore, and have the "Always exclude removable drives" selected, but there's fairly often, a very slow startup.

similar behavior in win11 with internal drives

to reproduce:
0. setup:
- have multiple internal drives (eg one system SSD and one nonsystem HDD)
- clean app and image on system drive
1. run pc and wait until HDD goes to sleep (you can hear how it stops spinning)
2. open image in Viewer via double click in win file explorer
3. press F1 to open About dialog

sometimes there is a few seconds delay at steps 2 OR 3,
looks like app is trying to access HDD (you can hear HDD wake up and start spinning) and only then proceed to work.
This is very strange because:
- only Viewer tab is opened
- there is no any cataloged images on this HDD

When opening browser, XnView creates the folders tree. Which path do you use for your external drives?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I have probably 10 drives via direct connection, USB drives and NFS drives.

There should be a setting somewhere to not catalog anything but the directory I am opening an image from, I would imagine.

But drives should be added in folder tree. Which path do you use to mount your network drive?

I typically use /media/username/drivename across NFS, local internal mounts and removable drives.

I have excluded these drive paths from "Catalog" with no real effect.

Once in awhile, I get a super slow startup and it seems to hit these excluded drives.

If you don't expand the media folder in folder tree view, there is no access

I can only tell you that every once in awhile, when I open XNviewMP, I get removable drive access. I see and hear the drives spinning up.

Pierre.
