XnView MP Metadata, Categories & Cataloging

Post by RandomTechGuy »

hello,

I have created a couple of nested categories under the category of Photographs - for example, Animals and Birds.

When I assign sub-categories (but not the parent category) to image(s) using XnView MP, and then update selected files based on the catalog, the keyword corresponding to the parent category is assigned to the selected fil(s), along with the tag(s) for the subcategories which I assigned (observed in version 1.8.6 of XnView MP). An image of the current XnView MP / Settings /Metadata options is attached for reference in case it's helpful.

Is it intended that the keyword for the parent category is automatically added to the target files (along with the keywords for the selected subcategories) when subcategories are selected and the target files are updated? (Fwiw, I did not expect this to happen.)

kind regards,
RTG

how else would you be able to tell the difference between root/sub (w/o assigning ids)?
  • root and sub keywords are stored
    A
    A|B
  • only sub is stored
    A|B

Thank you for the reply.

The issue (in my mind at least) is that the parent category /keyword - which was NOT selected to be applied to the selected image(s), is in fact assigned to the image and written to the file along with the keywords for the categories that were selected.

For reference of anyone else with this question, it appears to me that if Tools / Settings / Metadata / "Write categories into images as hierarchical keywords" is deselected, then only the selected keywords are written to the selected files, and not the keywords corresponding to the parent categories.
