Gray full screen when opening images if tabs have stayed open previously

Sometimes (difficult to reproduce) when I open an image by double clicking (XnView being the default viewer and opens in full screen) the screen remains dark gray. From here I can only exit by ESC key, trying to switch to the usual XnView browser window by ENTER does not work. In these cases if I start XnView separately (from start menu, or link) I observe that a tab from a previuously opened image is still open. If I close this tab and exit, then I can open images by double clicking without problems.
